Anti-EBV Antibody Panel
Performed at National Institutes of Health, Bethedsa MD
Effective  08Sep05 - present:
Results are reported as Positive, Equivocal, or Negative
Result Scenario:                                      Interpretation:
        VCA (IgG)  VCA (IgM)  EBNA-IgG
1                 -              -                -          No previous exposure
2                +             +                -          Recent infection
3                +              -               +          Past infection
4                +              -                -          Past infection
In most populations, at least 90% of the adult population will have been infected with EBV sometime in the past and, therefore, will be positive for anti-VCA/IgG and the majority will be positive for anti-EBNA.  Presence of VCA/IGM antibodies indicates recent primary infection with EBV.
